Kate Prince - Owner
Hi, I'm Kate. I've always believed flowers have a way of teaching us how to live. They remind us to slow down, to appreciate what is right in front of us, and to understand that beauty doesn't have to last forever to be meaningful. My grandad started me off on my floral journey, digging me my very own garden for my 7th birthday. I remember him digging up the lawn in the front of my house, making a bed, and planting snapdragons. He told the importance of watering, advice I promptly forgot, and my grief when inevitably tragic my plants didn’t make it to flowering, let alone a vase. From that inauspicious start, plants became a constant thread throughout my life. I sought out gardens wherever I travelled—from the breathtaking Butchart Gardens in Canada and the endless tulips of Keukenhof in the Netherlands, to grand English gardens and the vibrant Jardin Majorelle in Morocco. Long before I became a florist, I worked in landscape design and a plant nursery, learning how plants grow, how colour behaves in nature, and why the most beautiful gardens always feel a little wild rather than perfectly controlled (sorry, Capability Brown!). Life eventually took me from Australia to Dubai and then to Chicago, where I somehow found my way to Flora with no formal floral design experience—just a can-do attitude and a willingness to learn. I quickly discovered I'd found exactly where I was meant to be. What I love most about flowers is that they exist in the moment. Seasons come and go, and with them come the blooms that make each one special. We wait all year for the first peonies of spring, savour summer's abundance of dahlias and zinnias, and embrace the rich textures of autumn. The fact that these flowers aren't available all year is what makes them magical. Nature reminds us that not everything needs to be constantly accessible; sometimes rarity is what makes something worth celebrating. This belief is also at the heart of how we work at Flora. Floristry can be an incredibly wasteful industry, and while we know we can't change it overnight, we believe every thoughtful choice matters. We work with the seasons, don’t use floral foam, reuse and compost wherever possible, and continue to look for better ways to create beauty with less impact on the planet. Ultimately, flowers are only part of the story. The real magic is the feeling they create—the smile when someone receives an unexpected bouquet, the tears when a couple sees their wedding flowers for the first time, the comfort they bring during difficult moments, or the simple joy of having something beautiful on the kitchen table. Flowers may only last a week, but the memories, connections and emotions they create can last much longer. And that's what we hope every arrangement from Flora brings: a moment to pause, appreciate, and enjoy the beauty of right now.Flora Chicago
